Egg freezing is fast becoming a modern choice for women navigating careers, relationships, and life on their own terms. Somewhere between planning our careers, navigating relationships, paying EMIs, and pretending to understand tax-saving instruments, today’s generation is also quietly confronting another reality — fertility doesn’t wait for anyone’s timeline. Not even the most ambitious, well-intentioned, “I’ll figure it out soon” timeline.

And that’s exactly why egg freezing deserves a louder, clearer, stigma-free conversation.

For decades, anything related to fertility preservation was whispered about like it was a top-secret medical mission. Many still assume egg freezing is only for women battling illness. But science has moved far ahead — it’s society that’s lagging behind, clutching outdated beliefs like a family heirloom nobody asked for.

Why do we treat egg freezing like a taboo?

We live in a world where –

  • We are exploring Mars
  • AI is writing poetry
  • Cars can drive themselves
  • But a woman choosing to freeze her eggs still raises eyebrows

Honestly, at this point, the only thing that should be frozen without debate is ice cream — not women’s choices.

The science is simple, the empowerment is profound

Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) is not sorcery. It’s a well-established medical technique where:

  • Hormones stimulate the ovaries
  • Eggs are retrieved
  • They’re frozen using vitrification
  • And stored safely until needed

It’s a backup plan — not a binding contract. Many women who freeze their eggs still conceive naturally. But the reassurance it brings? That’s priceless.

Why are more women choosing it?

Because life today looks different.
Women are studying longer, working harder, marrying later, and building identities beyond traditional timelines. And why shouldn’t they?

Is it wrong for a girl to be career-oriented?
Or is it wrong for a career-oriented woman to want motherhood on her own terms?

If men can take time to “settle down,” why can’t women take time to “plan smartly”?

Egg freezing is not rebellion. It’s responsibility.

Parents, relatives, friends — this part is for you

Instead of asking, “Why now?”
Maybe ask, “Why not?”

Instead of assuming fear, consider that this is courage.
Instead of judging, try understanding that this generation is simply using the tools science has gifted them.

We don’t question people for buying health insurance.
Egg freezing is emotional insurance — for the future family someone hopes to build.

A heartfelt note

A warm thank you to Shailaja Tripathi for her thoughtful article and for including my views in such an important conversation. Voices like hers help bring fertility preservation out of the shadows and into everyday dialogue.

Before you scroll away, pause and reflect

  • What stops us from normalising fertility preservation when we’ve normalised everything from online dating to virtual weddings?
  • Why do we celebrate technological progress in every field except women’s reproductive autonomy?
  • If science gives women more choices, shouldn’t society give them more support?
  • And most importantly — when will we stop treating women’s timelines as public property?

The future of motherhood is evolving, and egg freezing as a modern choice is leading that change.
The question is — are we evolving with it?
