Journal Writing for Emotional Health and Relationships

Journal writing for emotional health is one of the most powerful yet underrated tools for building self-awareness and stronger relationships. May is dedicated to Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to and combat the negative stereotypes surrounding mental health problems. A real incident inspires this article and focuses on strategies for navigating challenging and unfamiliar behaviour to enhance relationships.

How Journaling Helps Couples Navigate Relationship Challenges

Relationships are often beautifully complicated. Couples inevitably experience highs and lows, and things may become rather complex. Challenges such as miscommunication, demanding work life, concerns about conception, excessive interference in personal life, or incompatibility often cause big differences. With the fast-paced nature of modern living, it is easy for couples to fall apart.

A Real Story: When Communication Breaks Down

Recently, a young couple approached me for counselling. They revealed that lack of communication and the constant pressure of starting a family led to major fights and differences between them.

Their fertility doctor cited the husband’s low sperm count for their infertility. As advised, they patiently sought medication. Unfortunately, after several months of treatment, their condition remained unchanged.

Their arguments turned into conflicts. They went days without conversing. While the woman worked, took care of her ailing mother, and did housework, the husband ran between office and trips managing his parents. This limited the couple’s opportunity for meaningful communication or introspection.

After a few sessions, I saw they were in love and wanted things to work. However, time, work pressure, and lack of communication prevented them. With no clarity of their own thoughts, things were going downhill.

Journal Writing: A Potent Tool for Emotional Clarity

During one of our sessions, I suggested that the couple consider writing journals daily. Engaging in journal writing can provide a valuable opportunity to establish a connection with one’s inner self. Moreover, it offers a platform for self-expression, reflection, and contemplation without any judgement.

Write about your deepest feelings, pose questions to yourself, and come up with a response. It’s okay to forgo writing on days when you’re feeling down or uninspired. However, if you make it a habit to write everything down — whether in an elegant book or a plain binder — you’ll look forward to those 10 minutes!

List your best and worst moments of the day. Mention day highlights — were you sad or hurt? Would you have changed anything that day? Furthermore, share five favourable traits about your relationship and use them in future interactions. Expressing emotions through writing manifests significant transformations!

Writing, reading, and reflecting on their deepest emotions helped the couple comprehend their relationship dynamics. It revealed too many suppressed emotions, which steadily improved everything!
